If you've sourced milk thistle extract before, you know the drill. A supplier sends over a spec sheet that says "80% silymarin," the price looks reasonable, and you're close to pulling the trigger. But here's the part nobody tells you: the number on the certificate and the number that comes out of the lab aren't always the same thing.
"80% on the label" and "80% in the drum" are two different questions
Milk thistle extract is sold either as a ratio extract or a standardized extract, and they're not interchangeable. A ratio extract tells you roughly how much plant material went in — 10:1, 20:1, that kind of thing. A standardized extract promises a specific assay, like 80% silymarin measured by HPLC.
The distinction matters because your customers build their formulas around that assay number. Capsules, tablets, blends — they're all calculated on a guaranteed silymarin content. If your raw material comes in at 62% when the certificate said 80%, everything downstream is wrong. And that's exactly what we keep seeing in the market: a certificate that reads beautifully, a real-world test that doesn't match. Sometimes it's a careless lab, sometimes a bad batch, sometimes the document was just written to look good.
What actually keeps your product consistent
A few things separate a supplier you can rely on from one you're gambling with.
A source factory, not a middleman. Buying from a trader means paying markup and being one link away from whoever actually produced the goods. Buy from the factory and the answer to "where did this come from?" is a straight line back to our own production line.
Testing you can re-check. Don't just ask for the COA — ask if you can verify it. We run every batch through HPLC, and the numbers on the report are the numbers in the drum. Send a sample to your own lab if you want; the results should line up.
The same result, batch after batch. The hard part of plant extracts isn't making one good batch, it's making the hundredth one just as good. Controlling the raw material at the source is what keeps your next order from being a surprise.
Ratio and standardized content, both. Not every buyer wants the same thing. Some need a straight ratio extract; some need a locked 80% silymarin assay for a specific formulation. A flexible factory does both without treating it like an inconvenience.
Why this matters to your own customers
If you supply supplements, your reputation rides on your raw material. One inconsistent shipment and the buyer who trusted you starts shopping elsewhere. Choosing a source factory with documented, repeatable testing isn't just about price — it's about not having your brand dragged into a quality problem that was never yours to begin with.
